Building and Energy's Industry Bulletin 171 is the regulator's formal notification that from 1 May 2026, it will be mandatory in WA to use lead free copper alloy products and material in contact with drinking water.
The switch to lead free products under the latest version of the Plumbing Code of Australia includes the introduction of a new lead free WaterMark and has been well publicised in recent years.
A three-year transition period started on 1 May 2023. During the transition period, plumbers may still install WaterMark certified products with the currently allowed lead content. Lead free WaterMark certified products may be installed before they become mandatory on 1 May 2026.
