Flexi-hoses, water damage and insurance risks - Murray Thomas explains on 6PR

Association news

Did you know burst flexi-hoses are the most common cause of insurance claims for water damage? Radio 6PR's Simon Beaumont asked our CEO Murray Thomas to explain.

According to recent data from Suncorp Insurance, flexi-hoses are responsible for one in ten home insurance claims. Many flexi-hoses under kitchen sinks are ready to burst and when they do, they can flood a home, disrupting lives and creating damage that cost tens of thousands of dollars.

Although every home has at least one flexi-hose most homeowners are unaware of the risks.

In an interview on Tuesday 19 May, Simon Beaumont asked Murray Thomas for a licensed plumbing contractor's perspective.

Murray detailed the multiple reasons why a flexi-hose can fail. It may be the wrong type of flexi-hose for the application, incorrectly installed, kinked, corroded or subject to excessive water pressure.

Among other advice for consumers, he emphasised the importance of having an licensed plumbing contractor do the installation, because DIY work may invalidate an insurance claim.

The Suncorp Insurance news story with the data that prompted the interview is $20 Part, $30,000 bill: the bursting risk under the sink.
