WA Government introducing much-needed reforms to plumbing industry regulation

Industry news

We welcome the WA Government's announcement that it is taking action to modernise and improve plumbing regulation.

In a statement released on Tuesday 12 August, Commerce Minister Tony Buti revealed the Government is introducing the Plumbers Licensing Amendment Bill 2025 to Parliament.

The Minister's statement correctly describes the Bill as "an important package of reforms to modernise and improve plumbing regulation and address industry concerns."

According to the statement, the Bill will bring about five regulatory changes - all of which we fully support.

  1. Clarify the roles of the Building Commissioner and the Plumbers Licensing Board
  2. Allow for regulation of plumbing design and verification work
  3. Introduce new powers for testing and maintaining plumbing safety devices in facilities such as hospitals and childcare centres
  4. Provide much needed flexibility in the scope of regulated plumbing work
  5. Increase maximum penalties for plumbing offences and the time for commencing prosecutions

The statement also includes a link to information about reforms the Government has already made to plumbing regulation.
