Plumbers and gasfitters who are asked to connect LP gas cylinders can help keep consumers safe by making them aware of the different valve types and new rules for warning labels.
For safety reasons, LP gas cylinders with traditional Type 21 POL valves are being phased out, although they can still be used. New cylinders have a safer valve design called LCC27.
All new leisure gas appliances sold in the past three years, such as barbecues and patio heaters, have LCC27 connectors that are only compatible with LCC27 valves.
Connecting appliances with LCC27 connectors to cylinders with POL valves is dangerous and should not be attempted.
Adaptors that allow LCC27 connectors to fit POL valves are also dangerous and their sale, hire or use is prohibited.
Appliances with POL connectors are compatible with cylinders with LCC27 valves.
Since June 2025, retailers have been required to display signage about valve types on cylinder cages and other storage areas. They must now also include labels on the collars of individual LP gas cylinders between 3.7 kg and 9 kg to identify the valve type.
Building and Energy will inspections retailer outlets to ensure compliance with the new requirements.
