WA Government action against copper theft

News

We have issued a media release in response to the WA Government's announcement on 30 August that it will introduce controls on the sale of copper. According to the Government, the changes they have announced are a first step and they will investigate broader reforms of legislation.

Effective 1 December 2020, anyone selling copper to dealers will have to pass a 100-point identity check, and dealers will need to record the seller's personal details, keep a record of all transactions and provide a daily report to police.

We have been lobbying the Government about copper and brass theft, which is a major expense for plumbing contractors. We are pleased they have responded with this initial action and urge them to follow through as soon as possible with the investigation into legislative change they have promised.
