The Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB) has released an advisory that explains the procedures required to mitigate the risks of microorganisms such as Legionella bacteria in drinking water and other plumbing systems in buildings unoccupied during the COVID-19 lockdown.
Microorganisms such as Legionella bacteria cause significant health issues such as Legionnaires' disease, which is a serious form of pneunomia. Water that is stagnant or slow-moving provides an ideal environment for these microorganisms to multiply to dangerous levels.
Water could also contain excessive amounts of heavy metals.
