THE wellbeing of our State’s plumbing workforce needs to take centre stage in 2017.
For many reasons, safety has largely been overlooked by the vast majority of plumbers in WA.
I’ve personally seen this over many years, both in my role as CEO of the Master Plumbers and Gasfitters Association of WA, and also as a former business owner and plumbing contractor.
There are many reasons safety is ignored, particularly when it comes to small business. One of the most common reasons is that many business owners see safety management as a costly, time consuming and overly cumbersome administrative overhead.
But here’s the rub. Whether we like it or not, much like our annual tax return, we can’t avoid it any longer.
Today a compliant and well-managed safety system is a regulatory requirement for all plumbing businesses.
This means if you don’t have one, there are severe punitive personal consequences including both financial and criminal ramifications as a director of your business. For the details visit the Safe Work Australia website.
This is, of course, in addition to the moral and ethical obligations you have of ensuring your employees get home safely every night.
Look at it like this. Safety should come before the decision to employ someone.
At the moment, business owners typically consider if they can afford a new staff member first and if they have enough work. Well in 2017 we want this to be the year you also think how they get them home safely.
The good news is we have a solution to help.
Thanks to a new partnership with Workforce Solutions and Perth-based safety consultancy USSA Global, we can improve the safety of your team by offering a subsidised safety solution.
Known as SafeX, it is a software platform built specifically for small businesses and tradespeople. It’s coupled with management support from professional safety practitioners.
SafeX is a cost effective and efficient way to ensure you are personally compliant with current legislation as a director of your business.
And by doing so, your risk is mitigated while you set the standard in keeping your employees out of harms way.
