At the turn
of the century Western Australia had grown to recognise
the necessity and importance of a system which could
adequately supply sanitation and clean water to the
community as an issue of public health and safety. This
necessity became paramount given the turbulent and inadequate
services that existed. It was in this type of environment,
that the need to form a body to implement and support
the delivery of these services helped create The Perth
& Districts Master Plumbers' Association in August
1901.
Since that time, the Association has
been through several name changes. Foremost behind these
changes, was the specific intention to reflect the constantly
changing composition of its membership and the industry
of the day in which it belonged to.
The first name change occurred in 1936.
The Association then became The Master Plumbers' &
Sheetmetal Workers' Association of Western Australia.
In March 1942, the Association was renamed The Master
Plumbers' Association of Western Australia. In November
1981, as a consequence of the dynamic changes within
the membership, another change was necessary to reflect
this position. The Association then became The Master
Plumbers and Mechanical Services Association of Western
Australia, which has remained through to 2001.
It was not until the Presidency of
Mr George Marston (1973) that the Association's activities
were boosted for the first time by the employment of
professional staff. This occurred in conjunction with
the Master Painters Association, forming the WAMPA Joint
Venture and moving to premises in Wellington Street,
West Perth. Prior to this the Association shared Construction
House with the Master Builders Association. In 1982
both Associations moved to the new purpose built MPA
Centre at 106/108 Caledonian Avenue, Maylands.
Over the past 100 years, the Association
has been able to provide dedicated representation of
the Plumbing Industry in Western Australia. The Association
would not have survived for this length of time without
careful planning and consideration for the future and
the tremendous effort of the Executive and individual
members. The Association's continuous achievements and
success can be attributed to these efforts.
Today the Master Plumbers and Gasfitters
Association of Western Australia, remains as the only
dedicated organisation concerned with the future viability
of the Plumbing Industry. The Associations' commitment
to training and continual improvement will keep it at
the forefront of industry development for the next 100
years. |
